The Post Office Hotel
The Post Office Hotel was first envisaged by Stephen Veness (the brother of George Veness) in 1882, when he was granted a hotel licence and built the first hotel on the south side of the Namoi River, called the Junction Hotel, on the corner of Strafford and Manilla streets. It was destroyed by fire in 1902 and immediately rebuilt as a two-story building. A few years later the name was changed to the Post Office Hotel

The Manilla Show
The first Manilla Show was held in 1932 but the movement towards this establishment started 33 years earlier when a public meeting was held at the Royal Hotel Manilla NSW where it was decided that a branch of the Farmers and Settlers Association be formed - over 30 district farmers attended the meeting.

The Bank of NSW
On Monday September 1st 1900, T. N. Johnstone and C. Simpson arrived in Manilla from Armidale with the mission to establish a branch of the Bank of NSW in Manilla.
In October 1905, The Bank of NSW purchased a block of land on the corner of Manilla and Strafford Streets, from the estate of Stephen Veness, for 1426 pounds, (today $140,000) and in 1911 The Bank of NSW opens for business.

Alfred was an astute business man and constructed his business life around the growth of the Manilla District, eventuating into a motor car dealership.
